With 28 years in the industry and involvement in thousands of weddings, Sue Gorman is one of the region’s most experienced party planners.

As the director of Ballarat Party Hire, Sue has been involved in every just about every aspect of the wedding set up you could think of, from the glasses through to the dance-floor.

But what is her favourite way to dress a venue?

Sue’s dream wedding is full of flowers, with lots of arrangements on tables and hung from the ceiling.

“I have seen some great setups with beautiful fresh flowers by Prunella in Kyneton.”

Ask Sue what her favourite type of venue is and she’ll tell you it’s a marquee wedding, because they’re all unique.

“Each marquee is the same but it is the couple’s ideas that make each wedding unique and exciting.”

“I also believe that families can become more involved in a marquee wedding, so that they feel like they’ve helped to make the event special.”

But she warns against using poor quality marquees.

“People think they can buy a marquee for their wedding, but they are very cheap and nasty. We have had frantic phone calls from brides or grooms at the last minute because the marquee has blown a way that could not happen to our marquees.”

Over the years, Sue has learnt to focus on what she does best.

“l realised that I can’t have everything that people want but that l need to know where to send them for that product. A lot of my time is spent referring people in the right direction so that they can get what they are looking for, while helping to make their search as easy and pleasant as possible.”

In fact, Sue works closely with her son’s company ‘Atmosphere Events’ to cater for larger functions.

The team has traveled all over Victoria for weddings, from Hamilton, to Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road and just about everywhere between, along with interstate.

“The guys even travelled to South Africa to do a gig.”

But regardless of the location, size or style of wedding, Sue says it all comes down to helping make the couple’s day special.

“It doesn’t matter how big the hire, my favourite thing is seeing our couples enjoying the set up and how happy it makes them.”
